Sexual intercourse

This is the most common way of getting a UTI because, during intercourse, it is easy for the bacteria to transfer from the bowel or vaginal cavity into the urethra. Therefore, women are advised to pee within thirty minutes after engaging in sexual intercourse. The myth that they should wash their genitals should be ignored because that changes the bacterial flora hence increasing the chances of them contracting a UTI.


Having constipation increases the chances of you having the infection because it becomes difficult for your bladder to be completely emptied. When this happens, the trapped bacteria gets time to grow thus increasing the chances of an infection. On the other hand, diarrhea and fecal incontinence may also bring about UTI because the stool may easily find its way into the vagina then the urethra. That is why it is advisable to wipe from front to back to avoid the fecal contact with the genitals.

Holding in urine

Doctors advise against holding in urine because holding it for about six hours or more may increase the chances of contracting a UTI. This is because when the bacteria do not get to the bladder in time, it can overgrow between voids. Therefore when traveling and you get the urge, make a stop and help yourself because holding it in until you get to your destination is not worth a UTI.


Drinking plenty of water has a lot of benefits besides quenching your thirst. Water also prevents UTI’s during the hot season. Doctors recommend that individuals should drink at least half of their body weight in ounces. That will aid significantly in flushing out the harmful bacteria that cause the infection.
